Choosing the right base van can save you thousands and make the conversion far easier.
The big decisions
1) Size: SWB vs LWB (and height)
- SWB is easier to park and cheaper to run
- LWB gives you the space you’ll be glad you had
2) Layout goals:
- Weekend trips (simple) vs full-time touring (needs more kit)
3) Payload:
Conversions add weight. Make sure your van’s payload can handle:
insulation, cabinetry, water, batteries, people, and gear.
Popular base vans (and why)
- VW Transporter: strong community, lots of parts, great driving feel
- Ford Transit Custom: great value, common, lots of options
- Mercedes Sprinter: big space, ideal for full builds
- Fiat Ducato / Peugeot Boxer / Citroën Relay: lots of width and space, popular in motorhome world
What to look for before converting
- Rust (especially underneath)
- Service history
- Any signs of leaks
- Tyre wear (alignment issues)
- Electrical quirks (can be costly later)
